If someone falls in love with and is willing to take a chance on any one of our special needs sanctuary dogs listed below, we are always open to discussion. We promise to fully disclose any significant health issues we are aware of and current medical needs. We strongly believe that no senior deserves to die feeling alone, unloved, and unwanted in a cold shelter environment. We do realize that end-of-life care is costly and our future growth relies heavily on donations. Every cent matters and is guaranteed to go towards medical needs. Please consider donating to help us help them.

Theodore
Theodore is our longest resident and has been with us for over three years. He came in with several other dogs who have long ago been adopted. He is a beagle / basset hound mix. We jokingly and lovingly call him our big baby because he is scared of his own shadow. This boy was traumatized beyond words by the way he was neglected by his past owner, seized by the county, and then ending up in a dirty county shelter.
He has never emotionally recovered and it took him months to trust us. Because of this, we will consider him a sanctuary pet unless a very special adopter comes along. We don't want to put him through another emotional roller coaster and we think he deserves stability at his age. Theodore has allergies, requires a prescription diet, and cytopoint injections every few months.

Emmy
Emmy has been with us on and off for almost 6 years. Emmy is the typical chi - she barks at strangers and either loves you or hates you. I actually fostered her back in 2017 for Richmond Animal League and she was adopted out within months. The family later decided not to keep her, and I couldn’t stand the thought of her being returned to a shelter environment. Because she was so scared and fractious when they first got her, Richmond Animal League agreed that to rehome her yet again would be devastating to her. I guess that would make Emmy our first official sanctuary dog!

Peanut
Peanut is a 16 year old Min Pin / Chihuahua mix. He is the perfect little dog. Although he is not fond of being picked up, he shows he loves you in other ways. He is healthy for his age, but we have recently noticed that he is struggling with his vision.
Peanut loves being with the other dogs here and living life with the pack. After spending almost two years with us here at the Sanctuary, we’ve decided to keep this sweet southern gentleman as an official sanctuary dog.

Misty
Misty has been through so much since arriving here two years ago with a huge mammary tumor. She has been through several surgeries and the cancer won’t leave her alone. In February of 2025, we noticed the tumor has returned and has also ruptured. Sadly, she is no longer a surgical candidate and we were told by our vet that she is now palliative care. We want her to experience being pampered. A spa day now and then and all the a love and attention that she desperately deserves.
We would truly appreciate any contributions made to Misty’s care. Please visit our PayPal page.

Memaw
Memaw is a sweet little old lady who just wants to rest after years of breeding. She is 15 - 17 years old. She is spayed. I promised her she could rest here and would be comfortable, spoiled and pampered until the end of her days. We give her daily supplements and pain relief meds to help her with the stiffness of arthritis. She loves everyone and while being held will place her head against your neck for comfort.

Norma
Norma is a new addition to the family. While we’re still getting to know her, we do know that she is somewhat feral. We’re working on socialization and hoping that she’ll one day feel comfortable being held and cuddled. She only wants to enjoy her final years, on her terms, and that’s what we are going to do for her. We believe she is approximately 15 or 16 years old

Louis
Louis is a gorgeous Pomeranian, approximately 16 old. All he wants at this stage of his life is a soft bed and good food. He is on lifelong heart medication and adequan injections for his arthritis. He weighs in at 8 pounds and because it would be easier on his joints, should lose one. We’re working on that together. He’s a friendly little guy and just loves being loved. Already neutered on arrival and now up to date on vaccines.

Peppe
Peppe arrived at the sanctuary in September 2022 already coughing and in congestive heart failure. Here we are, over a year later and he is still going strong. Amazing what medications can do to keep him comfortable. As long as he doesn’t give up, we will be right there with him. He’s a sweet little guy who loves to be with others.
Would you like to help? Peppe’s medications cost over $100 monthly. Please consider donating towards Pepee’s medications through PayPal.

Casper
Casper is a very gentle, tolerant and friendly dog once trust is developed. His tail wags and he gives you kisses when picked up. Please note that while he does allow us at the Sanctuary to pick him up, it will take time for him to feel comfortable enough to let someone else pick him up. Casper is a Shih Tzu mix. Other than being blind, he is in good health. He has glaucoma and sadly is not a candidate for corrective surgery. Casper self-soothes by walking in circles to calm himself down when he feels alone or in a strange environment. Because we have had him for so long without interest, he is now a permanent resident of our sanctuary.

Cupid
Cupid joined us late in 2022. He is a 15 - 16 year old boy who is an amazingly independent little man. His heart is too big for his little body and he needs life long heart medication to survive. He loves being outside and has not had one accident in the house. He has no teeth and does requires a soft diet. Cupid is very tolerant, friendly, and gets along well with other dogs. Although he is blind, he gets around just fine. He’s quiet and absolutely loves the outdoors. Soaking up the sun is his favorite thing to do. Cupid doesn’t feel sorry for himself. He doesn’t know he’s blind, so please don’t ever tell him.
